Understanding the Majestic Oak

The recent acquisition of one of my pieces, The Majestic Oak, by Royal Caribbean International has forced me to put down in words what I so regularly discuss about my work at conferences, or lectures, or in class. This has got me thinking that perhaps the diverse nature images in my Second Nature series would be bettered by an accompanying thought or idea. Who knows, perhaps it will lead to a book.

Anyway, I get ahead of myself.

Here is a quick sample of text that includes ideas about the Majestic Oak I often discuss but rarely record. I hope you enjoy. I've also posted the piece on my site if you'd rather check it out there.

The Majestic Oak, 300 plus years old, stands as a sentinel, witness to centuries of development and change. Saying nothing of the tree’s intrepid strength as a living organism, the “Majestic Oak” still stands today for one reason: its aesthetic characteristics. Without which, the tree would most definitely have fallen the way of the forest once surrounding it. The Majestic Oak survives as a reminder of a decision made long ago to preserve a specific aesthetic.

Eventually, the act of choosing begins a perpetuation; one aesthetic choice begets another, begets another, slowly defining a subconscious vision of what beauty is. Only the chosen are experienced. Thus, only the chosen can be remembered.

The print will be part of RC's permanent art collection and will be housed on one of their newest Celebrity line ships, the "Silhouette." Click here for more information on the ship and its inaugural sail. :)

Show Opening at the Museum of Fine Art at FSU

I am currently part of a group show that opened this weekend at the Museum of Fine Art at FSU. The show is entitled: Hyperreal World and was curated by Daniel Kariko. I am both excited and honored to included amongst so many other fantastic artists. The show runs from Oct. 9th to Nov. 21st, 2010. Below is the curator's statement about the show.

The urge to adapt the world to ourselves has long ago replaced the need to adapt ourselves to the place we inhabit. The mid-20th century interrogations of hyper-reality by Umberto Eco and discussions of simulation by Jean Baudrillard are here applied to recently renewed interest in political and environmental landscape. This collection of contemporary photographic work will attempt to forge a dialogue between the man-affected landscape and the idealized presentation of a landscape created for purposes of habitat or entertainment. -Daniel Kariko

Show Closed at Dina Mitrani Gallery

Here are a few installation shots of the show given to me by Dina Mitrani Gallery. I'm sad to see the work leave Dina's lovely walls, however they did manage to sell a few pieces of my work which I am ecstatic about. In a little less than two years since I've been exhibiting The Majestic Oak, the print has almost sold out of its edition. The Majestic Oak is now down to the final print in its edition of 5.

If you didn't get a chance to catch the work while it was hanging in Miami, there is still hope to see it. The work was shipped up to the Museum of Fine Art at FSU. Currently, it is on display there as part of a show curated by Daniel Kariko.

Adirondack Adventures Continued

While in the Adirondacks I spent some time with at my friend's camp on the lake. The camp was built around the turn of the century. Circa 1910. Here are a few quick shots I snapped of the great room and patio. The camp is beautiful and decorated in true Adirondack fashion. I especially love all of the eccentric taxidermy.

Here to save the day with his uber-obsessive super project is, Ian Aleksander Adams (said slowly with an Earth Shattering Cry). Quite a feat Ian is taking on with his lovely not-so-little website. So far Ian has only focused on the "DC Universe," but he promises to expand. So fear not all of you Marvel Junkies. The driving force behind this enterprise seems to be Ian's reflection that "the [comic/DC] universe, or multiverse, is quite probably the biggest collaborative creative venture in the history of mankind."

Social Networking in Fine Art Photography

Here's an interesting new body of work that investigates (re)placing context to inherently virtual statements. Artist's Larson and Shindelman have created a project based on Twitter. In series entitled Geolocation: Tributes to the Data Stream, Larson and Shindelman scour the twitter base for geotagged tweets and then go to those locations and make a photograph.

Moma Aquires the @ Symbol

Fittingly, the ever esoteric Museum of Fine Art (MoMA) has acquired the @ symbol into their collection.

MoMA Senior Curator Paola Antonelli wrote of the symbol, “It might be the only truly free — albeit not the only priceless — object in our collection.”

Above you'll find the @ symbol being used in a 1536 letter from an Italian Merchant and the @ Symbol being used in a Twit by Ashton Kutcher on Larry Kings' Twit about cruising with Snoop Dogg.

Another "scandal" afoot in the art world. Seems David Burdeny is galavanting around the landscape making photographs just a little too similar to other famous work. However, it seems to me that if the appropriation of nothing less than the exact image is worshiped as an artistic masterpiece(Richard Prince), then why can't a similar landscape photograph, re-photographed and repurposed, have the same artistic freedom of garnering new meaning? I have to say I am very proud of all of my students. For a beginning photography class their passion and drive for the medium is amazing.

This was a very tough decision to make, but here are some selected images from our last assignment dealing with landscape. As you can see their images of landscape really run the board from natural, to urban, to even impressionistic. Fantastic!

I recently jumped over to SCAD website to check out how the department was doing and ran across one of my images being used as their banner for the photo department. Sadly SCAD makes you sign over the usage rights to any work you might make while attending the school. While there I stumbled across this image of Alec and I talking about my work. He was blowin' through town with some French friends making a doc on his work. If you aren't familiar with Alec Soth's work you should really check it out.

Cascade Mt. Birthday Hike w/ Mom

Earlier this month I found some time to head up north to the Adirondacks to see my family. While there my mother and I took a chance and climbed up Cascade on a mostly cloudy and gloomy day. But when we hit the peak at just before sunset the clouds opened up and provided us with an amazing view. We didn't have much time but we managed to snap off a few shots and take a few well deserved deep breaths. I haven't really had the time to go through all the shots yet *cough* be patient mom *cough* but here are a couple images.
